Lidl is making waves in the retail landscape by becoming the first major supermarket to embrace The Vegetarian Society’s newly launched Plant-Based Trademark. This initiative aims to set a high standard for plant-based certification in the industry. Starting soon, shoppers will spot this trademark on Lidl’s Vemondo Plant! line, which boasts a diverse selection of plant-focused options, including convenient ready meals, everyday staples, and innovative vegetable-based products.

Impact of Lidl’s Commitment

Vanessa Brown, Head of Trademarks at the Vegetarian Society, believes Lidl’s involvement is a game-changer. It not only lends credibility to the Vemondo Plant! range but also provides official recognition through the Plant-Based Trademark. As consumer demand grows for clear and straightforward labeling, shoppers will soon be able to easily identify this trademark on various items in Lidl stores.

Expansion of Plant-Based Certification

The Vegetarian Society has been awarding trademarks for vegetarian and vegan products for years. However, the introduction of the Plant-Based Trademark last year was a response to an increasing call for clarity from product manufacturers. This new certification goes beyond simply excluding animal ingredients; it ensures that products exhibit true plant-based qualities.

Consumer Engagement and Verification

The trademark made its debut in the UK at the Plant Based World Expo Europe on November 13, with plans to expand internationally on the horizon. This initiative was created carefully, shaped by expert advice and an in-depth analysis of relevant case law and industry standards.

Brown pointed out a notable shift in consumer language, explaining that the term ‘Plant-Based’ resonates strongly with both consumers and producers. The Vegetarian Society offers comprehensive third-party verification and trademark services for products meeting their plant-based guidelines. This not only allows companies to confidently use plant-based terms but also empowers customers to make informed choices when shopping.
