The year 2024 marked a pivotal moment for the global tourism sector as it celebrated a remarkable recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic’s effects.
According to fresh statistics from UN Tourism, international tourist arrivals hit a staggering 1.4 billion, reflecting a robust demand from key travel markets around the globe.

The Madrid-based organization highlighted that numerous popular destinations not only welcomed back tourists but also enjoyed higher visitor numbers than before the pandemic.
In fact, the data revealed an impressive 11 percent increase in international arrivals compared to the previous year, effectively aligning with the levels seen in 2019, the year when the travel industry faced unprecedented disruptions.
Zurab Pololikashvili, the secretary-general of UN Tourism, affirmed that 2024 signifies a complete turnaround for global tourism.
Many regions saw not only a restoration of visitor levels but also a boost in earnings compared to 2019.
He further projected a continued upward trend for 2025, supported by strong demand that would benefit both well-established and emerging tourist destinations.
Regional Performance
Europe maintained its status as the top travel hub, recording 747 million international arrivals in 2024.
This figure represented a five percent rise from the previous year, and it also edged slightly above the pre-pandemic numbers from 2019.
Most areas of Europe exceeded past tourist tallies, except for Central and Eastern Europe, which continue to suffer the adverse effects of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In the Asia and Pacific regions, the growth was even more pronounced, with international arrivals soaring by 33 percent to reach 316 million in 2024.
However, this figure still fell short of pre-pandemic levels, accounting for just 87 percent of past numbers.
Noteworthy spikes were recorded in specific destinations, including El Salvador, which saw an 81 percent increase, and Morocco, which experienced a 35 percent rise in arrivals compared to 2019.
