In an exciting development for sustainable food production, Angel Yeast, a prominent Chinese manufacturer, has completed the construction of an advanced facility in Baiyang Yichang. This state-of-the-art establishment aims to produce an impressive 11,000 tons of high-quality industrial yeast protein each year and is expected to streamline production processes significantly. The facility is slated to begin operations in late 2025.
Innovative Protein Extraction Technique
Angel Yeast has pioneered an innovative technique for extracting proteins from yeast sustainably. This method is not only efficient but also environmentally friendly, producing just 5% of the greenhouse gas emissions typically associated with animal-derived proteins. Their flagship product, AngeoPro, is celebrated for its versatility, finding uses in an array of products such as protein bars, high-protein cereals, snacks, baked goods, and meat alternatives.
Exceptional Nutritional Benefits
Zhang Yan, assistant general manager of Angel Yeast and dean of the Angel Yeast Research Institute, highlighted the groundbreaking nature of AngeoPro. This yeast protein alternative delivers an astounding 80% higher protein content compared to traditional options, coupled with an impressive utilization rate of 96%. Such qualities position AngeoPro favorably when compared to most plant-based proteins. Furthermore, it supplies all nine essential amino acids crucial for human health, representing 47% of its total amino acid profile. In comparison, whey protein offers 46% essential amino acids, showcasing AngeoPro’s remarkable nutritional benefits.
Global Reach and Future Commitment
The introduction of this new facility is set to make yeast protein more accessible and cost-effective for consumers in Asia and around the world. In its pursuit of global reach, Angel Yeast showcased AngeoPro at Food Ingredients Europe 2024 in Frankfurt, Germany, and has successfully integrated the protein into a popular vegan protein bar brand in India.
Last September, the company began promoting AngeoPro as an additive for plant-based milk products, aiming to elevate both nutritional content and sensory experience to levels comparable with traditional dairy milk. In a recent interview with vegconomist, representatives expressed confidence in their ability to lead innovations in alternative proteins and plant-based food development.
Zhang Yan reiterated Angel Yeast’s commitment to significantly escalating investments in research and development related to yeast proteins. The company is determined to enhance production technologies and contribute to a sustainable future for people everywhere.
