The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has proudly launched its newest BioTech Hub in Olen, situated right next to its manufacturing and distribution site in Oevel, Belgium.
This cutting-edge center is fully dedicated to the creation of bio-based raw materials.
Mission and Collaboration
ELC’s mission revolves around developing proprietary bio-based alternatives to traditional ingredients.
By harnessing the potential of living organisms—such as plants, yeast, and bacteria—the company aims to produce active biomolecules that contribute to greater sustainability in their product development and manufacturing processes.
At this innovative hub, collaboration plays a pivotal role.
Local teams will closely partner with scientists from the Advanced Technologies Pioneering (ATP) group based in Melville, New York.
This synergy is designed to enhance ongoing projects focused on fermentation and bio-based materials.
Additionally, the Belgian manufacturing teams will work on scaling the production of these groundbreaking raw materials.
Quality and Production
Roberto Canevari, ELC’s Executive Vice President of Global Supply Chain, highlighted the critical nature of sourcing top-quality raw materials for their prestigious beauty offerings.
With biotechnology-derived materials being produced locally at their main manufacturing site, ELC can ensure responsible and efficient large-scale manufacturing.
Under the direction of Dr. Caroline Paulussen, the hub is expected to significantly boost ELC’s in-house capabilities for producing bio-based materials.
After comprehensive production testing over the coming months, the facility is on track to commence commercial operations in 2025.
Strategic Location and Future Innovations
Belgium has long been a vital manufacturing base for ELC, with the company first establishing its international facility in Oevel back in 1965.
Over the decades, ELC has expanded its operations at this location, most recently adding a modern distribution center.
Jamal Chamariq, Senior Vice President for EMEA UK&I and Travel Retail within Global Supply Chain, noted that the BioTech Hub reinforces ELC’s dedication to providing innovative, responsible beauty products for consumers.
He also pointed out that the hub’s strategic location in Belgium will enhance partnerships with leaders in the biotechnology sector, enriching ELC’s innovation landscape across Europe and beyond.
